Partnership with "Keep Louisiana Beautiful" for Litter Detection

Anna Vacha

intuVision was proud to join Keep Louisiana Beautiful (KLB) in their training to help reduce litter across the State of Louisiana, showcasing how intuVision VA can automate detection of litter, keeping public areas clean and saving man-hours and providing wider area coverage for detecting litter.

KLB is a state program aiming to bring people together to build and sustain vibrant, clean communities across Louisiana. This training was put together to inform enforcement agencies about the available solutions and technology to reduce and enforce illegal dumping.

KLB Facebook post about this event summarizes the initiative as: "Today, at the State Library of Louisiana, Keep Louisiana Beautiful is joined by 38 individuals from 23 enforcement agencies for training on how to use cameras to enforce illegal dumping laws. ... Thank you to everyone in attendance! Let's put a stop to littering and #LetLouisianaShine."

intuVision VA Litter Detection has been used both in the US and overseas, on highways, municipal garbage locations, and on walking trails/around public trash bins. It is capable of identifying objects as small as a water bottle from up to 25 feet away, with greater range for larger items - allowing wide coverage from each camera.

Three options for processing were outlined in the training - real-time processing, with video streamed to a central server, real-time processing, with video processed on the edge, or post-processing video files, up to 30x faster than real-time. Real-time processing, with video streamed to a central location, is the most scalable and can be the lowest cost, but requires sufficient internet connectivity between the cameras and the central processing location. Real-time, on-site, processing, works well in locations where there isn't an internet connection, and uses a mini-pc or other computer on-premise. The final option works well if there isn't internet nor the capability for processing on premise, with video files collected from the cameras, and processed faster than real-time at the office.

With any of these methods of processing, intuVision VA provides reliable, easily verifiable detections of littering incidents, facilitating enforcing penalties and automated ticketing, without dedicating staff to manual video review. intuVision VA streamlines the process by detecting, capturing, and notifying personnel of littering events for quick, efficient enforcement. Once littering is detected, receive alerts via email, text, or the intuVision Review Application. Notifications include snapshots of the incident, camera location, vehicle license plates (when applicable), and access to recorded video for further verification.

Dumping or Littering near Trash Cans

Monitor high-risk locations such as near trash cans or donation bins. Alerts can be triggered when trash is left outside of designated containers or when items significantly exceed expected sizes (e.g., illegal dumping of furniture).

Littering by pedestrians or from vehicles can also be tracked, including cases where the act is temporarily obscured from view by a vehicle.

Discouraging Vehicle Litter

Monitor roadways to detect littering, issue citations, and dispatch cleanup crews as needed. Littering often decreases significantly when people are aware of active enforcement measures.

intuVision VA is configurable to detect a wide range of items, from small bottles to large debris, covering a large area, 35-50 feet depending on camera view and quality.

Monitoring of Private Property

Detect and monitor littering or dumping on private property to help management or security identify offenders and respond quickly. intuVision VA can also support security efforts by identifying unattended items that may pose a threat.

Through the training efforts and subsequent grant proposals, we are looking forward to help "Keep Louisiana Beautiful" through these efforts and with intuVision VA Litter Detection.
