An intuVision Certified Reseller Partner, Bi3 was asked to provide an automated video solution to detect mud build-up on the roads around construction sites to facilitate timely cleanup for highway traffic safety. Mud accumulation on the roads is not only unsightly but also creates very dangerous driving conditions—raising accident risks and liability for the construction companies. Manual inspections are time-consuming and cleanup is often delayed depending on the check frequency.
Bi3 brought this request to intuVision, to develop a video detector for mud build-up on the road surfaces. intuVision team created a generalized Surface Anomaly Detector to alarm on significant surface changes caused by mud, standing water, or other debris.
All intuVision video analytics products; intuVision VA, intuVision Post Processing and intuVision Edge are fully designed and developed in-house. This enables intuVision team to add new features easily and customize the video analytics for any unique project requirements in a short time.

Upon this request from Bi3, intuVision team quickly prototyped a surface texture change detection algorithm to test and verify the performance on real world data. After the proof-of-concept prototype, the production version of this custom event, Surface Anomaly Detector, to alarm on surface texture changes has been developed and delivered to Bi3 within a 3-week turn around time. With its adjustable detection sensitivity, the Surface Anomaly detector has been successfully tested with video data collected from construction sites with various levels of mud build-up on the road surfaces.
Using intuVision VA's Surface Anomaly Detection, Bi3 built the MudCam hardware (camera and compute unit) as a turnkey solution to detect surface deposits. Bi3’s experienced team supported rapid deployment in the field, with cameras mounted on temporary towers or light poles; using various power sources such as solar, battery, or hydrogen.
With intuVision VA’s customizable event output system, alerts are automatically routed to relevant personnel—such as road cleaning teams or site managers— enabling immediate action and timely scheduling for cleanup and hazard mitigation, improving safety, efficiency, and community satisfaction around construction projects.
Originally used for detecting mud deposits on roads and the construction sites, intuVision VA Surface Anomaly Detector is not limited to this use-case. As part of the intuVision VA suite, the new event detector capable of recognizing significant surface changes, can be deployed around public buildings, production floors or in any area where surface buildup from leaves, snow, water, or other materials poses a problem.
The MudCam Surface Deposit Detection solution using intuVision VA’s Surface Anomaly detector has been successfully deployed across multiple sites and has received industry recognition, including a nomination for Technological Innovation of the Year at the London Construction Awards (LCA) 2023.
