Houston Public Works - Vehicle Turn Counts with Post-Processing

Anna Vacha, Kenneth Brown

Using intuVision VA Traffic with Post-Processing in our office we get the vehicle counts when we need them, without having to send video out and waiting for counts from third party companies or wasting man-hours on manual counts.
- Kenneth Brown, Project Technician IV, Houston Public Works, Texas

The Customer Challenge

Houston Public Works was looking for a vehicle counting solution for obtaining actionable data from their intersection traffic study video collections.

The Solution - intuVision VA Tailgating

They chose intuVision VA Traffic with Post-Processing with the goal to move away from third party manual counts towards doing more internal processing using intuVision VA.

Equipment-at-a-Glance

Hardware: Street Logic Camera, Existing Windows PC

Software: intuVision VA v.15.0 Post-Processing

Deployment Details

Using existing equipment, Houston Public Works team sets up cameras at various traffic intersections of interest for collecting video for neighborhood traffic count studies (NTMP – neighborhood traffic management program). Video is saved in short video files, in a standard video format to be processed by intuVision analytics when needed.

Planned studies take advantage of intuVision Traffic even rule set, including:

  • turn counts at intersections,
  • counts by vehicle classification for trucks, passenger cars, and motorcycles,
  • congestion detection,
  • average speed detection,
  • traffic heatmaps.

With all intuVision VA post-processing done in house, it will allow Houston Public Works to move away from alternate solutions which require videos to be uploaded to a website & potentially long waits for the counts to be provided. This will allow for greater data protection and much lower prices per hour of video analyzed, along with quicker turn around times on data.

Pay-as-you-use licensing model allows Houston Public Works to purchase processing time as needed and used on their schedule, without paying additional fees during the periods when the system is not in use.

Turn counts can then be accessed either through intuVision Review Application’s the rich reporting features, or exported into Excel for more detailed analysis.
