Anna Vacha

"Having video analytics technology to keep guest counts has been invaluable. Our guest services staff is now able to focus on greeting and assisting our visitors. In addition, (to counting visitors) the software allows us to have more comprehensive data to analyze and determine trends, critically important information used for training and planning future programs and exhibitions."

The Customer Challenge

A west coast art museum needed an add-on to their existing security system to count their daily visitors automatically. Since admission is free there is no ticketing system to track the traffic and the museum used their front foyer staff to count the visitors. intuVision People Counting analytics provided the perfect solution for the museum.

The Solution - intuVision VA People Counting

TYCO Integrated Systems chose intuVision People Counting to retrofit to the museum’s existing security system. During a 2 week test period museum staff used clickers to count incoming guests while the intuVision system counted the visitors automatically. intuVision VA achieved 97% accuracy in visitor counts, providing daily reports of traffic and freeing front of the house staff to greet and help visitors for an enhanced museum experience and operations.

Benefits
  • Ability to use existing surveillance cameras for People Counting analytics
  • Improved museum operations and accurate visitor statistics
  • Reliable operation with no maintenance
  • Savings in personnel time and additional personnel costs

Equipment-at-a-Glance

Hardware: 3rd Party server, Illustra and Arecont IP cameras

Software: exacqVision VMS, intuVisionVA Retail version 8.0

Solution Details

The museum had an existing video surveillance system comprised of exacqVision VMS software running on an off-the-shelf server, and IP cameras monitoring the entryways, collection rooms and the museum perimeter. The Museum wanted the people counting solution to use existing cameras without requiring any change in the camera position and look angle. intuVision VA provided a good fit for all their requirements with security in the collection rooms and the accurate count results they needed.

Additionally, since intuVision-VA is an exacq Certified Software Application, it is directly installed on the existing server used for the VMS without the need for an additional hardware to run the analytics. During a two week test comparing the manual and the automated counts baseline numbers were established for normalizing the automated counts taking museum staff tours and movement into account. The normalized counts consistently achieved over 95% accuracy resulting an average accuracy of 97.3% over this observation period.
